If you’ve searched for affordable primary care in Hilton Head or Bluffton SC, you may have seen the term Direct Primary Care (DPC). But what does it actually mean, and is it worth it?
At Integrate, Direct Primary Care is a simple agreement between you and your provider. Instead of billing insurance for every visit, you pay a monthly membership, similar to a gym membership, for direct access to your primary care provider.
This model removes insurance billing from routine care, which allows more time with patients, transparent pricing, and easier access to your doctor.
What Is Included in Direct Primary Care?
Every DPC practice is different, but most memberships include:
• Unlimited office visits
• Same- or next-day scheduling
• Longer appointments (30–60 minutes)
• Basic in-office testing (EKG, glucose, flu tests, urinalysis)
• Discounts on labs, medications, IV therapy, or wellness services
At Integrate, memberships start at $99 per month are billed quarterly and are designed to make primary care simple and predictable.
What DPC does not cover are outside services like CT scans, ultrasounds, hospital stays, or specialist procedures. Many patients pair DPC with a high-deductible or catastrophic insurance
Why do Patients in Hilton Head and Bluffton Choose Direct Primary Care?
If I had to summarize DPC in two words, it would be Connection and Currency.
Connection
Many patients feel rushed in traditional healthcare. Insurance-based clinics often need to see a high volume of patients to stay profitable. That can lead to short visits and lots of testing.
Ever go to urgent care with a fever and end up tested for Flu, COVID, RSV, Strep, and maybe even sent for a chest X-ray, after only five minutes with the provider?
That’s not connection, that’s estrangement.
Direct Primary Care allows more time to talk about sleep, stress, nutrition, mental health, and chronic conditions, not just symptoms. This is especially important because up to 20% of primary care visits have a mental health or behavioral component.
Patients in Beaufort County often tell us they appreciate having a provider who knows their history and takes time to listen.
Currency
DPC also provides transparent pricing.
No surprise bills. No confusion about copays. No wondering why a test was ordered.
You and your provider make decisions together based on your health needs and financial comfort. This often leads to faster diagnosis, better prevention, and stronger long-term health outcomes. Now that’s compounded interest!
Is Direct Primary Care Worth It?
For many individuals and families in Hilton Head, Bluffton, and the Lowcountry, the answer is yes, but not for everyone.
DPC may not make sense if:
• You already have excellent employer insurance
• You rely heavily on specialists or hospital care
• You are on certain government programs
However, many patients pair Direct Primary Care with insurance for emergencies and find it both affordable and convenient.
Why I chose Direct Primary Care for my practice.
As a Nurse Practitioner serving Hilton Head and Bluffton, I chose the DPC model because I wanted real relationships with my patients. That takes time.
I also didn’t want insurance rules to dictate care plans when better options exist, and I wanted to include complementary and wellness services that insurance often doesn’t cover.
Direct Primary Care allows me to focus on people—not paperwork.
